The Natura 2000 area PLH040041 Dunes of the Toruń Basin was the destination for the nature workshop on October 19, 2023. This area boasts one of the largest inland dune regions in Poland, perfectly representing the landscape of the training ground.
The dunes, ranging from 10m to 25m, meadows, heathlands, and spontaneously growing pine forests and birch groves are elements of nature that the participants had the opportunity to encounter during our meeting. However, the main attraction turned out to be wolves! We didn't have a chance to meet any individuals, but their tracks were certainly visible.
The training ground area is used by wolves throughout the year. The military territory serves as both an ecological corridor and, due to its closed nature and vastness, provides excellent conditions for breeding.
But that's not all. The tremendous added value of workshop No. 9 was the opportunity to visit another Natura 2000 area, the Forts in Toruń. These forts are also located on military grounds and, in addition to their historical value, hide another treasure - within their walls, one of the 20 largest winter bat colonies in Poland thrives. Here, we can encounter species like the greater mouse-eared bat, the pond bat, the parti-colored bat, and Natterer's bat.
We extend our sincere thanks to the caretaker of this area for the passionate and loving lecture on these animals.
